  • Hi,

Just to add what others have mentioned that it is a great place with lots to see, but you do need more than one day.

Also, in case this is of use for other people reading this thread they have good accessibility for those who are disabled. Not everything will be visible as some things are up stairs, but there is plenty that is.

I have mobility issues and was quite ill when we visited. I was unable to get onto the trams (high steps), but they have a small, wooden coach with a wheelchair lift. When I realised I would not be able to get on the tram the conductor spotted the coach was just about to leave and shouted over so that they waited for me. I was popped into the back of this, and as there was only room for just one more person in the back my husband was invited to sit next to the driver so got the best view of the day!

I too absolutely love Beamish.Even on a wet n windy day I had a super visit. I first went on a coach day trip spending 5 hours there. I recently returned staying at a nearby Travelodge in a £30 room and made good use of my previously purchased ticket. Will be going back for the Christmas Fayre.

I see they sell fish&chips fried in beef dripping which sounds nice too.

I'd miss that out if I was you! It's a working exhibit and the fish and chips are cooked on a small coal fired fryer. It's a slower process compared to modern chip shops and the fryer just can't keep up with demand. People start queuing about 11am even though they don't have food ready until 12pm, and you're looking 1-2+ hours standing in a queue for them.

I've had them in the winter when the museum is less crowded and the queue is shorter but I'd never attempt it in the summer!

I live within 20 minutes walk of the museum so we've been there countless times. They are constantly collecting new things and it's a place you can go back to again and again and again and still find something new to look at. You can definitely spend a full day there and still not see everything. I'd pick the sections you are most interested in and plan your day around those, then wander round the rest if you have time.

We've donated various household items to the museum that belonged to older relatives. Love reading tales of how much people have enjoyed the museum and think my relatives would have liked knowing people are getting pleasure out of their old stuff.
Here I go again on my own....
