Hi could any one recommend an tom tom pls,
Something for a new driver , with less experience on rds. I.e lane guidance , recalculate direction if you take the wrong turn ect.speed cam alternative route from traffic ,something less then £150.

A satnav isn't going to make you a better driver. Personally I'd think it's better for new drivers not to use satnavs as it'll get you more used taking notice of road signs and your surroundings.

But if you're adamant you need one then try the Tomtom Go 510.

As per above - learn to drive without distractions/assistance first and then consider a sat-nav - especially if you're intending to use it for speed limits

It depends if you want live traffic update s(that will cost subscription fees otherwise you can often get Tomtom start units with 5 inch screen for around £100....

Satnavs can only do so much for a novice driver - for which lane, the driver really needs to be checking signs & road markings & that comes best with practice not a machine which may hog windscreen space.

However, better a basic tomtom (*without* live traffic updates) than using a phone's navigation which flattens the battery & is a dashed sight less reliable than the dedicated gadget which will not fritz at junctions...

I'm no fan of screen space wasted on "how far through the journey" - better a cheaper smaller lower spec gadget where every millimetre tells you where you are, then grille mounted (seperate gadget) so the windscreen stays clear.

If your going to trust a satnav for lane guidance dont expect to finish a journey without getting lost or having an accident.

They all recalculate after a wrong turn. They are all useless at some point in time. Ive had them say turn left in teh middle of a long A road where there are just fields. Had one say turn left off teh main road and then down a lane and then a very sharp right and back onto the main road it took me off. No idea why.

And some don't warn you of a necessary lane change at big junctions in time to change lanes, especially when traffic is heavy and a bit of extra time is needed to move over. Talking of spoken warnings here because you won't want to be peering at a tiny little screen to work out which lane you should be in.

Garmin nuvi 2569 LMT-D has been good. Free lifetime map updates and digital traffic alerts. It cost about £115 on offer with Currys.

On the broader discussion, there's a reassurance for a new driver in knowing you won't get hopelessly lost. Plus not having to worry about navigation leaves you free to concentrate on the driving. Although as stated they aren't 100% reliable for lane guidance at complex interchanges, they're a lot better than nowt. I don't find the view ahead is obstructed, it's only a view of the car bonnet that it hides.

You can normally get a TomTom Go for about £100 with free lifetime updates. As long as you use it for guidance and don't take it as gospel then you'll be fine; I've got lost at more roundabouts due to weird sat-nav instructions than without sat nav entirely.

When I started using a satnav when I first started to drive, it was very distracting.


As others said on here, get some experience driving normally and knowing which lane to go on when driving e.t.c.

I think the opposite is true.
