O/S Daily Thread Saturday 6th August 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

    Morning everyone.

    Thanks for the thread HH.

Yesterday was a lovely day, mostly. In the end I decided against Oban so went down to Inveraray instead - big mistake as I timed it wrong and came against a wave of coaches bringing cruise guests into the town. Great to see so many visitors streaming in but impossible to move anywhere. Nevertheless I enjoyed my visit and walked round the grounds of the castle as the tourists were engrossed in either shopping or watching the pipe band and highland dancers performing.

Before I went out I put a casserole into the slow cooker, great to come home too. Later I went across to the sea lock and watched yachts go in and out for a while, a very soothing time.

Today I don't know. Weather is supposed to deteriorate during the day so, if so if I can, I'll cut the grass early on.

I hope everyone and their loved ones are well or getting better. Happy Saturday everyone.

    Morning all

Fish fed, hubby has a cuppa, the dogs have had their morning constitutional and the washing is on the line.

We had a lovely meal out yesterday, I had sea bass, hubby had fish and chips.

Hubby is now on holiday for 2 weeks, so it's on with decorating and getting a skip delivered.

We've been offered a good deal by the estate agency where my DD2 works, there is a shortage of 3 bed houses in this area, they are also hoping we will buy from them so are keeping an eye out for us.

We have been recommended to try having an open weekend first, rather than a series of viewings as that way we can sell without constantly tidying up!

Hubby is getting up now so I will do a full cooked breakfast and then we can work through until 6 or 7 tonight when we will have another meal.

    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

Good morning all and thank you for starting us off Hester.
I have had washing in the machine overnight and when OH gets up, he can crawl out of the window with it. He'll shop later and I have paperwork to do - am calling it paperwork but really it is laptop work.
I fell asleep on the bus on the way back from work yesterday, fortunately the person sitting next to me was getting off at the same stop, otherwise I could have ended up in another town. Went to bed early but still woke at 4 so how much work will be achieved is anybody's guess!
Other than work, the house needs a good clean and there will not be time, e cep a quick once over. I'm not well again, fluey cold is back and am very hot. Never mind, it will pass.
Weather forecast is good and the sky is clear. I had to walk a long way yesterday and it was lovely and fresh.
Hope everyone has a good day
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • Morning folks and thanks for starting the thread HESTER. A glorious start here and a very good forecast too. Looks like summer is coming back for a few days.

I feel bogged down before the day starts I am so behind with jobs. I don't know what to tackle first. The week has flown by without a minute to myself. The house needs a good clean top to bottom, I have a mountain of ironing, no food shopping has been done and the back garden still looks like a builders' yard with the demolished fence and the sawn off trees and bushes lying around. And the bedding needs changing! A superkingsize was a good idea at the time but not when it comes to washing and re-making it.

The fridge is looking a bit bare till we can fit a shop in but, fortunately, the freezers are stuffed full so will have a rummage shortly. Both freezers are in desperate need of defrosting when I can fit it in.

Have a good day if you can and (((HUGS))) to the poorlies and those with poorly rellies. Take care xx

  • Good morning all, thank you Hester for starting us off. An open weekend sounds good, I watched an Australia program a while ago where they did a house up and they had an open day where everyone could look around the house.and as you say doesn't have to be constantly tidied.

We hope to work on the front garden this morning The hedge badly needs cutting again so Himself will do that and I will do the labouring. My nasturciums(sp) ? in pots are looking good by the front door and I have been feeding them once a week with tomato feed and it seems to be working.

TA you have my sympathy, I can't believe what hardwork gardening is now that we are both older and of course Himself can't work at the pace he once was able to and isn't nearly as strong. I can remember when he had muscles on muscles, but I love him just as much. Good luck, but pace yourselves. If I lived nearer I would come and help you with the shopping and the ironing, and you have had your DGDs as well haven't you. As you probably know our 23 year old DGD lives with us but she is old enough to be no bother, and of course is at work during the week

Gers you sound to have had a good day despite the crowds, have you decided you are happy where the furniture is now?. You sound very much like me, I sit here and think about it and then have a move around to see if I am happy with it .

Have a good weekend all and stay safe

Lainey and Csarina thinking of you both and your poorlies and hope for some good news soon

    Morning everyone,

    Thanks for the thread Hester.

We also had a nice meal out last night, it's my eldest DSS's 21st early next week but he is off to the U.S. with a few pals so we met him and his brother at the local Thai restaurant. I had a seafood curry which was good but mostly noodles and really quite hot! Caught up on the boys busy lives and laughed a lot, much needed and appreciated.
Did manage to get most of the house done yesterday and also picked up some good rtc bargains at W8trose so stocks are replenished. This morning am going over to see Bill and then over to Mum's to pick her up. She would like to find a fascinator or something to go in her hair for the wedding so think we will have a look in BuryStEd as have no wish to go to C/bridge on a Saturday afternoon! If she doesn't find it can always try the city during the week when it's a bit quieter, find these days I avoid crowds more and more, can't abide all the pushing and shoving!
So busy day today but in a nice way :)

    Morning everyone,

Thanks for the threa HH. An open day sounds like a good idea. It doesn't sound like it will take long to sell if 3 beds are in short supply. Good luck with the decorating.

Gers - sounds like you had a good day.
AOD - get better soon x
TA - I would tackle the bare fridge first - nothing worse than having no food in. The garden, bedding, ironing can wait :)

I am off to the church shortly to dig out a rambling rose which was dedicated by a long standing member of the congregation. We have building works starting on Monday and if it's not removed, they will bulldoze it away. I'm going early to avoid the heat - due to be 23 degrees later. I am not good in the heat. Hoping to be back to do a bit in our garden later.

Need to strip beds and do other washing today as out in London tomorrow - my dad is over for a month and we are having a family meet up.

    Have a great Saturday everyone,

Good morning all, bright and sunny here in north Kent.DGS Ben is back tomorrow from Norwich and I'm really looking forward to seeing him.

Just going to have a pottering day today I have some celery left in the fridge that is going to be turned into soup this morning. No wasting it :0 it will do me for a couple of lunches. Down to a couple of apples in the bowl ,but I have tinned or frozen fruit that will do me for a few days.My fridge is looking extremely bar at the moment ,but I am resisting shopping if I can.

I only have four more dinners to dig out from the freezer during the next few days so NSD's for me if I can.Roll on next Friday and we will be off on our holidays :):):)

Candlelight I know what you mean about age The outside of me is crinkly and ancient, but inside my head I am sure its still 1961 :) But I only wish I had the knowledge in 1961 that I have today :) But you can't live in the past and I just am so lucky to be still alive and kicking :)

I have a smashing family and I wouldn't swap them for the world.Although I would happily swap the creaky joints, I do sound a bit like an unoiled gate at times. My skinny ribs body that I had then was a tad different to the slightly better upholstered one I have now.Today I am built for comfort ,not speed :)

I wonder would anyone else like to be as they were in my case, over 50 years younger perhaps than today

Life seemed so much more simple back then ,although we all had worries even then.

Mine were would I be able to afford to go away on holiday that I had saved up for. I went on a coaching holiday and visited 5 european countries (with seperate currencies for all of them ) I did and had a great time, saw my first colour T.V. teabag, and duvet :)

TV was greeny/blue in colour and I though made the people on it look slightly sea sick:)

The teabag in a glass of hot water I thought was the epitome of sophistication (My late Mum said 'It'll never catch on in this country ) and the duvet I thought were just very odd, and going through Germany seeing women hanging these great big pillows out of the window to air
I just thought very odd. When I told my Mum about it she just sniffed and said 'What else can you expect from foreigners ':):):)

Seem absurd today doesn't it How life can change in the most ordinary things :):):)

I was becoming more aware of politics back then, and went on several Ban the Bomb marches with friends. We were young and thought the possibility of being blown to smithereens was quite likely owing to the Cold War.

Anyone remember wondering what you would do if you heard the four minute warning !!! Old age has its compensations though and sadly its not a given right to everyone . So I like to think I am enjoying my senior years, and seeing my grandchildren grow into decent adults is one of the benefits

Have a good day everyone what ever you are doing

    JackieO xx
