My wife uses a VERY OLD 'Mrs BEETON' Cookbook. Once you have fathomed out the measures - the recipes always turn out excellently, especially the cakes and puddings.
I suppose she was one of the first 'Celebrity Chefs' - shame there was no TV. :rotfl: :rotfl:
I love my grans Mrs Beeton bookand her old Be-ro book too. Other than that its my trusty Asda cookbook or one of my student ones. I'm not keen at all on celeb chef recipes, i have quite a few of the books, had them bought as presents cos people know i love to cook but have only made a handful of things from them.
Then again these days i tend to get all my recipes from you lot!

:rotfl: Funny thread. Usually my food turns out okay but the first ( and ONLY ! ) time OH cooked for me was gross. I had been working and he made a Shephards pie for my supper except he did'nt cook the mince, just bunged it in a dish and put instant mash on the top amd nuked it in the oven. It was ...words fail me. slimey half cooked goo with this watery white stuff floating around. I have refused all offers of his cooking since ( 27 yrs ).
My fave cookbook is The complete yorkshire farmhouse cookbook based on the series which was on Yorshire tv yanks ago and a 99p book of bread and cakes.0 -
Lorac - is it the Farmhouse Kitchen cookbook? I've got that of my Gran's too! I love the older cookbooks, good plain food, nothing over the top or fancy for me!

I used to have that. I was a young mum at the time and I loved the series. Do you remember the 'salt and pepper mix'?0 -
Yes thats the one last printed in 1984, it was based on the tv series at the time. The presenters were at first Dorothy Slieghtome ( sp ) followed by Grace Mullysomething. I have had it years and it is great for just about any simple ( us yorkshire folk like simple ! ) recipe. My copy is a bit battered and going yellow but is still a good read.
Salt and pepper mix ! yup remember that too.0 -

Mines 3 volumes in one i think, its great.
I like simple things, us Lancashire folk are like that tooI like to make something special for me and OH on occasion, something i haven't tried before but for everyday family meals i prefer something simple, as long as it fills them up and isn't full of cr*p then i'm happy

Not strictly a recipe - but funny and a good lesson none the less. My mum was going to the cinema with her friend, and had put her lasagne in the oven, and chopped the carrots and put them in the pan on te hob, she told my dad to put them on in 45 mins, and they'd be ready when the oven alarm went off for the lasagne, dutifully he did this, however she severely overestimated his cooking skills, as he didn't realise water needed to be added to the pan of carrots, and consequently they burnt onto the pan, and the smoke from the pan lining burning left huge stains all up the wall and ofc ruined her pan! Life lesson - be very, very clear with instructions when trying something new!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Life lesson - be very, very clear with instructions when trying something new!
Especially when giving instructions to the male of the species - we follow them to the letter. :rotfl: :rotfl:I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

You must see if it's cooked, I said, handing him a knitting needle. The needle went in and came out, followed by a thin spout of steam - as the cake sank below the edge of the tin.
Thanks for that - he said bitterly - and has never baked since!
FZwanab, the river cottage recipe wasn't THAT bad ! I just gave them a bit extra time in the oven
Triker, I'm sorry, but you've just given me a great laugh :T

Gillian McKeith's Cinnamon Rice Pudding. This is her healthy version of one of my favourite puddings and was supposed to be 'fantastic'. The ingredients are long grain brown rice, rice milk, cinnamon sticks and lemon juice and zest. No sugar as it's 'naturally sweet'.
Oh so wrong - it was terrible!
And the worst part was that I'd halved the recipe for two but ended up with a great big panful which would have fed six.0
