Best tip I was given was to use the local bus service. It's very cheap, reliable, and covers everywhere you might like to visit.

I stayed at Waikiki and really wish I'd stayed at Haleiwa instead, which is on the north west coast. Waimea valley is worth investigating if you feel like a good walk. I also enjoyed this place...

If your teenagers are energetic, you could take them on one of the hikes into Diamond Head volcano crater.

Hope you have a great time, and I take it you do know Turtle Bay Hotel was the setting for 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'?
This is brilliant thank you I will show the kids these links and see what they fancy, they are lazy teenagers but I could do with them burning energy lol0 -
Wow
I didn't expect so many great Ideas, I forgot to turn on email notifications so I didn't even see all these fantastic comments.
I will go through all the links with hubby and kids later.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to post and share things to do.
I have a car for the 2 weeks so I will be able to go traveling, I was gutted to see they have cancelled the ferry to Big Island so no lava flows or observatory unless we can find a cheap tour.
Thank you again for all your messages :-)

I totally forgot to add, if you're up on the North Shore go and check out Kua Aina burgers. They also have branches in London and Japan, but the North Shore branch is the original and rumoured to be a favourite of Obama's.
In any case, the burgers there are good!0 -
Awww I do love a good burger and a presidential seal of approval isnt a bad thing to have lol
Thank you0 -
Goodness - I have never heard of Pearl Harbour being called a rip off! Local bus out there and then entrance is free, including the trip out to the Arizona. No need to prebook, just get there relatively early in the morning. There is quite a lot to do in the museum area before your trip to the memorial site, and the whole experience I thought was very balanced - including the film you watch before hand.0

Maybe I was just having a bad day that day
There was no warning that bags were not allowed inside the perimiter and had to be checked in at a cost of $3 but you could carry all your loose stuff through the gate without it being checked then buy an empty bag inside for $3.
On the day I was there, there was no warning that the Arizona monument was closed to the public until we were on the launch and had left the dock so while not a totally wasted trip on a boat, the actual point of the trip was not accessable to us. The times on the ticket for the launch are stricktly adhered to as well, I was about 30 seconds late in joining the queue for the time on my ticket and the attendant refused to let me in, I had made the mistake of taking a look round the museum before joining the queue.
Thankfully a supervisor let me join in on the next launch out.
Everything else inside the fences cost money to visit and the rest are just souvenier shops, I have to say, over a year later, I still feel that my experience was not a good one and I still feel like I was ripped off
