Water on the carpet, if you have aircon, will be blocked drainage hoses. Very common on Peugeot/Citroen.

The water in the expansion tank could just be really old, change it and keep an eye on it. If you think it's been serviced, then check the brake fluid isn't black, because dark brake fluid is a sure indicator that the garage has been taking your money and not doing anything to the car (or an indicator that the car has only ever had "interim" servicing done).

    hi all

im am stumped as to why I have a sludge colour in my expansion bottle, the wifes friend took this off and cleaned it the best he could, it still had an oily covering on the inside slightly, he didn't tighten the bottom hose up so it came off while she was shopping emptying the expansion bottle and the hose dangling down.

a friend can and re attached the hose and put water in the bottle, she went 4 miles and the heater went up, she put more water in and made it home.

When I looked at it I squeezed the top rad hose and bobbles came out of the water in the expansion bottle and I topped this up.

Shes drove it for a day and all ok no temp rise.

but yesterday the water went down again to the min mark, and temp went up,

    no leak on drive

my friend is stumped as the below is not present

no white smoke on start up
    no power loss when accelerating
    no milky oil in dipstick
no sludge on oil cap or expansion bottle cap
top hose soft when squeezed and hot
no bubbles in expansion tank when running.
No over heating apart from after the expansion bottle emptied, but not a lot topped up

Slight water loss (but could this be as may have air in coolant system because of hose coming off and didn’t open bleed screws)

No oil loss, same mark on dipstick

We have put rad weld in about 2 years ago and we thought we had a small leak on the water pump but its still ok (could this be the sludge gunk? Coming back to haunt us)

Also wife puts tap water in water bottle. (with antifreeze)
and water/oil hasn't been change (flushed) since we got it 3 years ago, car when we got it had 36000, now haves 51000

A friend in a garage is going to do a sniffer test on the water bottle to check the head gasket

    Any help please

Either you are very strong, or the radiator cap is faulty. This is supposed to happen as the water expands and pressurises the system, If there is a small amount of air this comes out first and eventually the radiator fills itself from the expansion tank, but I've never been able to squeeze a hose hard enough to blow air into the expansion tank.

Get the sniffer test done, then you can decide whether to do the head gasket, running it with the bottom hose off probably didn't do it a lot of good though.

You could just have a leak and really old coolant. My first approach would be to dump the coolant completely flush the engine and rad through with a hose pipe in both directions. Take the expansion bottle off and give it a good clean to get all traces of gunk out. Refill with proper pre mixed coolant, idealy with a strong smell and bleed the coolant system with heater set to max.

Then run the car for a few days you will then be able to tell f the leak into the footwell is coolant as you will smell it. If level then continues to drop you either have a leak or a water gallery has failed in the block allowing water into the cylinder.

Worth getting it sorted quickly because even if you do not have a gasket problem now if the car seriously overheats it could kill the gasket and warp the head.

I squeezed the top rad hose when the expansion tank lid was off.

I didn't run with the bottom hose off, when she was driving it must have came off the bottom of the expansion bottle as when she came out of work the hose was hanging down and the water in the bottle was on the floor.

This engine is known for head gasket issues, but seems that was advised to you earlier in the thread.
