Old Shares Certificate

My wife has found an old shares certificate while moving things out of her parents loft. The shares were for a company called Ocean Group PLC. The certificate states the share registrar is Lloyds TSB, but when I rang them they said that company wasn't on their database and I would need to ring companies house to find out what happened to that company. From doing a bit of research myself, it appears Ocean Group PLC merged with NFC PLC in 2000 to form Exel PLC.
Exel are wholly owned by Deutsche Post DHL.
Does anyone have any advice or who best to contact. Exel PLC? Deutsche Post DHL? Would these shares likely to still be valid?
Head is spinning a little bit already!
