Car Insurance question - comparison site and the AA

I've been shopping around for the insurance renewal and used a couple of comparison sites and they both give the AA as the cheapest quote - about £260 with protected no claims. The sites take me into the AA system. But being suspicious, and also as an AA member, I've never found the AA to be competitive. So I called them and also ran the same details directly through their online system without going through the comparison sites and both times the quote is about £680 (way more than the £380 quoted by our current insurer).
There doesn't seem to be anything stopping me buying the £260 deal - but I'm concerned they'll decline it at some point. Does anyone know what's going on here?

I found the same problem with the Admiral group on confused. By the time you get through to a member of staff (They don't allow me to purchase online) the quote is twice as much!
Can't offer any advice really, I ended up going with the next cheapest quote one the list. £50 quid more but the service appears much, much better than Admiral and I got free breakdown cover.0 -
There's something funny about AA car quotes. My annual premium is about £230, which is good. Unusually for me i've stayed with them a few years as it hasn't changed. When I check each year via comparison sites or as a new customer it comes out several hundred pounds more (and i have triple checked the details are the same).0
