Thinking of selling campervan but unsure what to move on to?

Thinking of selling my much adored campervan which I use as my everyday car once it passes its MOT in October, I will then buy a runaround car (any thoughts for £2k ish?) and save towards either a small motorhome or a car plus caravan? I'm unsure which to go for.

I understand that on a site it can be a nuisance to pack up a motorhome every time you want to go anywhere but I've been used to that with a camper and don't have a problem with it. I love the freedom of being able to be up and off at the drop of a hat with the camper. On the other hand, financially a car and caravan makes more sense but as a single granny, driving and manoeuvring on site/small ferries etc worries me. I don't go abroad, but enjoy seeing more of this country now I have more time, as well as out of season camping.

Can anyone offer me the benefit of their advice about the pros and cons of these options? My camper is wonderful but my grandchildren have now outgrown it and it's time for someone else to fall in love with it. (I know, I know, it's only a car!)

Many thanks

DS

My parents had a motorhome for years but the one thing they found difficult, particularly as they got older, was the ability to travel around the area once they pitched up at a site. I think they may have found a caravan with a car to run about in a better option. Horsed for courses I suppose.

I have a car and a caravan and the main benefit as already mentioned is the ability to travel around while on site. I know that once I'm pitched up I can go out whenever I want without having to setup again.

I wouldn't worry about manouvering the caravan because it really isn't that difficult if you practice a few times when you first get it. Some people find it helpful to go on a caravan course where they will teach you how to reverse it and put it where you want it easily.

Some people have motor movers which are fun little toys that can help, but shouldn't be a substitute for reversing skills. At a site I went to last year two caravans turned up together both fitted with motor mover. For some reason neither of them were working properly (looked like it was caused by a flat battery). So they then started manhandling the caravan and pushing it into place uphill. I on the other hand reversed easily into a tighter space than theirs. So it's always worth practicing reversing!.

Some people also say motorhomes are easier to just go somewhere last minute. But I don't completely agree with that. With my caravan I often decide the night before or on the day whether or not to go somewhere. My caravan is always packed and full of everything I need. So it's simply a case of picking it up on the way of wherever I'm going.
  • Just being nosey... What kind of camper is it and how much are you hoping to sell it for?

Why are you sending your brother in laws uncle Mr Mary Andrew Peter, to collect it whilst paying by yahoo secure or yahoo finance or paypal secure which will protect the OP.. :)

A little off topic there, but do expect emails and messages like that. Also if they ask for more photo's there is a chance your item will be listed on various site for sale at a price much less than its real vaue. Its a way to get pictures of items they claim to be selling and your unlikely to find teh pictures on ebay etc.

Haha, yes thanks for the warning. I once sold my car on ebay to someone who sounded just like that but as I always give everyone the benefit of the doubt and am still not old/cynical enough to think ill of anyone, I let him come and look at the car. He wanted me to change the paperwork and all sorts of things, I really did begin to feel quite worried. However in the end he bought it, paid cash and has emailed occasionally ever since. Really nice people it turned out and the messing about was just a misunderstanding and poor English.

But still, I will certainly heed your warning! Thank you.

Any more thoughts on my original questions?

I have a caravan, been away many times with my mate who swaps and changes more than his underwear.
He always gets a lift with me. He did want to go somewhere earlier than we planned to so had to pack everything away. He bought a caravan after that. But someone offered him a camper and only wanted a couple of magic beans so he swapped again.

Its a personal thing, For me a caravan wins hands down.
