Thank you for your replies, yes he is divorced I have seen the papers, the reason for not wanting to declare are rather complicated and family are involved in this...can't go any further than that I'm afraid, but I guess that it will just have to be declared then !0

Yes, you do have to say that you are divorced when you meet the registrar to give notice of intention to marry, and again when they fill in the forms at the start of the civil ceremony.
But both are in private, with just you two and the registrar, not in front of family and friends. I recently got married in a registry office, and we did the paperwork in private, and then our families came in for the vows and the signing by witnesses. The marriage certificate was just handed to us in an envelope.0 -

The only ones who will know are yours, the registrars office and whoever signs as witness
Pick your witnesses wisely if you don't want family finding out
If it's any consolation , my dads mother went to her grave never knowing her one good catholic son had divorced0 -
The correct term is 'previous marriage dissolved' and you have to declare it whether a civil or church wedding.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Not really private - the "notice to marry" is posted publicly on display to allow anyone who may want to object to come forward.
And anyone can buy a copy of your marriage certificate by paying the statutory fee (£10)0 -
And the question becomes, why does it matter to the state yo differentiate whether someone is "single" or "divorced", if in either case they are free to remarry (or for any other reason). Someone that has a legal divorce should be able to declare themselves as single, because that is what they are.
Just another reason not to get married, one to add to the absurd difficulty involved in getting a divorce without fault (two year / five year wait).Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
Good point about the witnesses suki1964, and about the notice TonyMMM.
I wasn't aware of the notice going up - they can't have been very prominent in our council, but I appreciate this may be different elsewhere.
Hope you get the lovely and drama-free wedding you are looking for, Lulu.0 -
Previously early in the last century, in the column for marital status if a man/woman (I think it was both) were divorced it would say "previously the husband/wife of Joan/Joe Bloggs", now that I would have objected to. I am sure many people wouldn't want reference to their former spouse on their marriage certificate
