Internet speed

Can anyone who understands these things please have a look at this for me?

I'm not technically minded, but even to my eyes this looks crap! Is this likely to be constant, and is it affected by how strong your connection is - mine has been low or v low most of today.

And can you recommend a good, reliable ISP? Am with Orange, but thinking of leaving!!!

  • Speed Down 949.64 Kbps ( 0.9 Mbps ) Speed Up 241.99 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
    1) Speed up will always be lower than speed down.
    2) If your connection is a 1MB connection then you are doing pretty well (as 0.9 is close to 1.0)

£10 per month with sky gives me:

    http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/118961489518981324231.html

Speed Down: 12731.00 Kbps ( 12.4 Mbps ) ( bit slower than normal)
    Speed Up: 641.78 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )

A 1 meg service is pretty poor at today's rates.

can u get the 10 quid BB with sky, without having all the other crap they sell?
    Get some gorm.
  • According to BT line speed is 8mb . I have got wireless broadband, switched from ordinary, both with orange. In my opinion the connection was quicker when wired, and more reliable, but I would like to keep wireless as want to get laptop so I can move about. DD uses it on her lappie (not using when I did test). Also, due to house layout I can't connect broadband up properly with phone line, need to do after it goes into phone so broadband would cut out when phone rang.

I've been trying to avoid sky as wanted to wait until they can do their special offer re TV, broadband & phone in my area. Also, I don't want to change as better the devil you know etc...... but as the devil I know is killing me I may have to :p.

Will redo test in a few days and see if it's a glitch, if not will have to bite the bullet.

    Thanks all.

what is you line speed 8mb ?

do you know how far you are from the exchange ?

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

then input your exchange to find out your distance from the exchange to your house

are you using a usb modem or a wireless router ?

if you using a router is this connected to the master socket or are you using an extension lead

do you have adsl filters on the phone sockets where they should be ?

According to my son :o our line speed is up tp 8mb.

We are 1.25km from exchange (what an interesting site! Although not sure how accurate - says we can get Virgin cable, didn't think we could).

Using a wireless router, Orange Livebox, plugged into adsl filter I think? (Son did it, it hasn't been altered). (ADSL filter is the little box splitter thing, right :o ?).

Maybe I'll just get a carrier pigeon........

"up to 8MB" is misleading - I live ~600m from my exchange, am on "up to 8MB", but download speeds never exceed 400kb/sec. Upload speed is constantly around 45kb/sec. That's more than enough for me :D

Unless you live very near the exchange you won't get near 8MB speeds. Does the speed fluctuate depending on the time of day you do the test? Could local congestion be resposible

try switching off the router for 40 mins or so. Might reconnect at a higher speed. What are your speeds like when wired to the router.

I live just over 1 km from my exchange and get 13.5-14 Mb down and 600+ KB/s up on an "up to 16 Mb" so that doesn't always hold.
