You can get a BB with a score of 8 or more from the PIPassessment.0

Thankyou for your replies. I will bear in mind what you have said, but I will still apply, I do have the backing of my doctor.

Not benefits related, but have a good browse of online disability equipment shops, or the Amazon category. You'd be amazed at all the little gadgets and do-dah's that can help. As an example, I think you can get a thing that goes on the car seat to help you turn and get out of it. A steering wheel ball is great for turning the wheel one handed with less effort. There's loads of kitchen stuff, and even things like using chip pans for normal cooking, so you're lifting the pasta/veg/whatever out of the water instead of tipping out boiling water can help.
You should qualify for VAT relief on most aids too.
Thank you Ames,
I like the sound of the steering wheel ball. It is fortunate that over recent years I have bought things to make my life easier in the kitchen. I'm having a lot of trouble turning the key in the front door too.
I was aware of the car gadget but I can turn and get out of the car ok I just need the door to open really wide- which is my main reason to get a blue badge.
Would you know how I get vat relief?
Gill

Hi Gill, VAT relief depends where you buy things from .Specialised shops tend to be set up to offer VAT relief with a form declaring your disability, but in turn may be more expensive and so the actual saving to you is minimal compared to buying the same thing from for example Amazon. On the other hand if buying very specialist equipment the saving can be a few thousand and it's only available from specific places anyway.
I can't post a link but if you Google vat relief disability gov it will bring up the official page explaining it all.
As above it is possible to get a Blue Badge without claiming PIP - my first then orange badge was prior to claiming DLA - but you need to meet the criteria either way which if it's for mobility issues (rather than no arms or visual problems) is almost invariably the equivalent of not being able to reliably walk 50 metres. For the car door problem that you describe a car with sliding or forward opening doors may help.

I was looking at rollators (wheeled walking frames with a seat) on Amazon last week and some of the sellers said the price was exclusive of VAT and they'd email a form for you to fill in to be sure you qualify. So it doesn't have to be a specialist shop with it's own site to get it.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

Oh yeah sorry didn't mean to imply it can only be at specialist shops, just that they're more readily likely to know about it. Good to hear Amazon retailers are set up to do it now too.0
