The "motile" American Indians were decimated by the "sessile" Europeans.
Were we sessile we'd have remained in Europe and complained (at length) about all the things we didn't like it about it.
(And decimate originally meant to kill 1 in 10, and we did a bit more than that!)Let's make it illegal to settle anywhere permanently.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -
Pretty much the same thing aren't they?
I thought they were really similar too.

Yes, the Roman clubbing thing.
It only works because more people will live than dead.
If you ask one guy to kill nine, it would be silly.
I have been looking for a word that means kill 9 out of 10.
The world population is over 7 billion, and yet David Attenborough tells us the Earth can only sustain 1 billion. Numerically, we therefore want to "decimate" 9 out of 10 people, leaving 700million, which gives some breathing space before we have to do a cull again.
If I could create a catchy word, maybe it will go viral.0 -

Stalinism perhaps.
Plenty of choice.

Dunno what interest rates were like at the time though.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

I am perfectly happy with the approx £200k gross combined (equivalent) dividend and rental income that we receive annually, it is a nice top up on our salaries. If it drops slightly, so what? We do also have some other assets too. That is going to allow my wife to retire either this or next year, and myself to drop down to one day a week this December (it is a lifestyle choice to continue working one day a week).
EDIT: If we decided to sell all our shares and property, we would have to pay about £800k capital gains tax, so the income would be lost on that £800k, so that is a benefit in delaying selling the property a few years. But also it would be madness to give up approx £200k income and opt for savings interest instead, which would give a much poorer return.
Fine, but for some people the return on the money doesn't matter as much as the return of the money.

The bank note vault sends shivers up my spine.
It's like collecting Andy Warhol prints.
Somebody can always print more.
Eventually, you won't even pay G4S to send a minimum wage slave to guard it, because it's worth less and less.
More compact at least:

For a modern one million pound note, I would expect something less perishable than paper. Laminated platinum sheet with RFID chip?0 -

Store banknotes issued by a strong economy that has no need to print more money? (which George Osborne called the last refuge of a failing economy before he did it himself and then called it a strong economy)
I'm not recommending it for everyone. I have 72% equities. But I can see the logic in not wanting to buy more at these prices. For a pension fund with liabilities in a currency, the only way to guarantee them may be to store that currency.“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0
