Petplan help

Hello,
I think we're about to bite the bullet and get insurance for our Bedlington Whippet.
Firsty, does anyone know how age effects the premium? Morty is about 4 - 6 years old but we don't really know as she was a rescue. So would I get a better price if we guessed her age at being 4 or 5 years old?
After doing some research is seems like Petplan are a well trusted company to go with.
We've had Morty for about 7 or 8 months and she does seem like a bit of a problem dog. She's a real scavenger so we feel like it's only a matter of time before she hurts herself badly by eating something she shouldn't. She also had some mammary tumours removed about 5 months ago this was apparently due to being spayed at an older age. She seems good now. She sometimes limps on various legs from time to time but that's probably just a whippet breed issue.
We are not sure whether to go for the 12 month essential plan or the Covered for life plan. If anyone has any advice it'd are really great to hear it!
Am I right in presuming that insurance doesn't do much for day to day small vet visits for things like upset stomach etc?
Many thanks in advance,
Tom

Any symptom she has had will be an excluded pre-existing condition for at least two years.
If you take out 12 months insurance it would only cover any new symptom that isn't related to any other symptom in the last two years, so it would only really be useful for accidents and public liability.
If shes a scavenger stop her accessing things she shouldn't eat, operations to remove foreign objects really aren't pleasant.0 -
Lifetime cover is the best but also the most expensive.
Any condition she has before taking out insurance , and anything that can be related to it, will be excluded as a pre existing condition. There are companies that will consider cover for these if there has been no recurrence or treatment for two years. You would need to discuss that with the underwriters.
You will have an excess to pay on each condition or each condition each year, depending on the policy you have. I think Petplan is currently £115 for each condition per year so any amount under that will not pay out.
Routine treatments such as boosters, flea and worm treatments are not covered and dental cover varies depending on the company chosen. Some are accident only, others will cover dental disease as long as a yearly dental exam is carried out and any recommended preventative treatment carried out.
You need to read the policy document- not the policy summary- carefully to ensure you know what is covered.
Premiums are usually based on age, breed, your address, average vet fees in your area.
There may be an additional percentage excess charged when the animal reaches a certain age- anything from 8years to 10 years depending on the company used.0 -
What age is she registered as at the vets?
This will be the age they take as gospel for any claims so will need to watch what you put on the policy or you risk invalidating it and them not paying up (potentially)
We weren't with petplan but for us pet insurance was there for big treatment/emergencies, smaller things weren't worth the excess/premium hike for us.0
