In the circumstances as you have described them 30mph would not appear to be cautious. The HGV was probably positioned hard to the left in order to make the swing into the turning.

I wouldn't go out without ear plugs in. They don't completely block sound, but reduce the horrific noise from wind blast which would slowly turn you deaf or give you tinnitus over time.

Riding without ear plugs will damage your hearing. Noise levels inside a helmet can exceed 110 db even at speeds of 35mph. Most riders wear them these days. They do not completely block external sounds but reduce noise to a safe level. I would never ride without them.
