Going from Portsmouth is a nice suggestion, but if we are to stick to your initial suggestion, I would recommend you go to Boulogne sur mer, and then take a trip to Le Touquet (although might not want to stay there as it is quite a posh place, therefore more expensive. It has a beautiful long beach with many actiivities to take part in. The town centre is pleasant too.

Boulogne is a nice small town with nice restaurants. The kids might enjoy the nauticca aquarium which is quite a nice one.

Calais to Le Touquet is about an hour and Boulogne is half way in between.

It's not France but we've just come back from a few days in Ypres, Belgium. Plenty to do and around an hours drive from Calais.

IIRC when we booked a Brittany ferries holiday with the outward sailing from St Malo a cabin was included in the price. It was in May so not high season.

We chose to return via Caen so an evening crossing back and no need for a cabin.

Unusual. That's not normally the case.

You could be right. Maybe it was just cheap. I know that a crossing, cottage and cabin was incredibly good value. We had a cottage big enough for 6 although only 4 of us travelling.

It's the two teenagers which make the planning difficult.
Would beaches be the best option.
Or a campsite with a big pool.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
