Faulty Electricity Meter?

Hi,

Hope someone can help me or offer some advice.

We moved into a new built home on 13th May 2016. It's a modern home and well insulated.

Our meter reading on moving in was 00052. I read it yesterday, 2nd August 2016, it's now reading 19537 (I've disregarded the red figures at the end) which I think is very high.

I contacted EON, our provider, who state that it will cost £93.00p if we want a check meter fitted to confirm if our meter is faulty.

There's only 2 of us living in the house which is mainly only occupied at night.

Our house is 3 bedroom mid terraced, heating and cooking is gas. There is no underfloor heating and we don't use a tumble dryer.

Do you think the meter could be faulty?

Any advice much appreciated.

Yes that is incredibly high. You will only be charged if the meter proves to be accurate. Have you been taking daily readings to check your indicated use ?

In future read your meter and submit reads at least monthly, saves a lot of problems ;)

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I only just noticed it yesterday so have used this as a base to start taking meter readings.

I may just pay the £93 for the check meter to give peace of mind if anything else.

Take daily reads for a week or so and see what you get. Post them here if you want further advice.

It would appear that, going by the meter readings, we have used 19485kwh in the 79 days that we have actually occupied the house.

I have sent EON all of the information that they have requested and am now awaiting their response.

By my calculations the above equates to £2496  in electricity excluding the standing charge for 79 days.

We have had a few people on here making the same complaint of a rogue meter going bonkers. The meter was a little white digital meter made by Landys and Gyr or Siemens.
As Molerat said, there is no charge if the meter is faulty , which it sounds as if it is but just do some simple checks before calling them out by switching every appliance off in the house, including freezers and checking if the meter is static for an hour or so. Digital meters will show a little red light which flashes faster as you use more electricity and that red light should be off if every appliance is off..
Other than that, just check that your teenage son has nt got some plants growing in the loft because the sort of energy consumption you have there is excess to what a cannabis growing house would use

    Morning dazzh,

Already some excellent advice on the thread so far, so thank you for this :)

molerat is spot on here, we'll only charge if the meter isn't faulty.

I agree with everyone else so far, take reads every day and monitor the usage and the meter and see what results you get.

Then speak to us and we can arrange the check meter and the appointment etc for you.

Just one question, did you read the meter when you moved in? Or was this a reading you were given by the builder/developer?

    Thank you
