Uneven flooring solution

We have just purchased a house with poorly laid laminate flooring in the open plan kitchen/dining room. The kitchen is part of an extension that is about an inch lower than the dining room. At present the flooring bounces and is coming away where the kitchen joins the dining room. We are reluctant to level off the whole of the kitchen as that will affect the height of the kitchen units (which we don't want/can't afford to replace) We also want to avoid a step down of an inch. But the floor as it looks horrible. Does anyone have any budget friendly suggestions that will look nice? We would like to stick with laminate if we can but also open to other suggestions if tiles/vinyl would work better.
We just wish the previous owners had levelled off the floor when they built the extension!

Don't upset the kitchen units.
Level the floor up to the fascias and butt up to the plinths.
OK, not perfect, worktop level is reduced by a half inch or such, and more worrying, any leaks under the units are trapped and cannot flow out over the floor.
That will put you in a similar situation to millions of other folks, ie, don't have an under sink leakI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
