Insurance for my car starts on the 4th Aug 2016

They have taken payment from my credit card 3 days in advance.

My existing insurer Esure is cheaper than any other quote I can get anywhere by going online to comparison sites and the independents.

however the quote for the same insurer esure is cheaper via the comparison sites.

direct renewal (money taken from my credit card) £212
comparison sites £181.97 / £180.68

Is it worth pursuing with my insurer for a better price (refund)?
or do I just leave it as it is?

I would ask for a reduction tbh and threaten to take elsewhere

New business often gets an early year discount (1 or 2 years typically). Renewals lose that new business discount.

Some providers will match when you phone them up. Others will not.

Is the cover identical? The policies as shown on comparison sites are often stripped back to the bare essentials in order to get the headline price as low as possible (ie they often have a high excess, no legal cover, no hire car add-on etc). The policy you're renewing may have some of those add-ons in place, which may account for some of the difference. Whether you actually want those add-ons is a different question of course.

Or it may be the loss of the new customer discount, as above.

If they won't match the price over the phone there's nothing to stop you cancelling, then buying a new policy through the comparison site.
