What's eating my dianthus buds?

I do not seem to be able to grow dianthus or carnations plants. I do not know who is eating the buds? Any idea what is causing the problem? Thanks

    Is the plant growing but just not flowering or are you seeing buds - but they disappear or die back?

    Mine are providing a meal for the slugs.

    Unfortunately, although slugs are not fond of the leaves - they seem rather partial to the flower buds - I kept finding them dangling from my dianthus flowers - swiftly dispatched on sight...;)
