Good evening, newby here
Ok, come home from work to find my dogs renewal estimate from More Than. Not to happy but she is our dog and we'll will pay whatever we need to but just wondered if you guys could clear uo some confusion, which has come from the vets and other dog lovers.
Quickly, as a puppy she was £17 per month the next year after treatment for allergies(which did amount to over £1000 I admit for all the test etc)...it then went up to £28 a month. Her treatment consist of a 'medicine' that leading vets have put together and she needa to be injected every 6 weeks with a little amouth for around 10 months. The theory is that after 10 month the treatment should sort her allegies etc out and again, it has worked wonders.
During the past 10 months of injections she has no further treatment. Everytime we went for her injections the vets billed more than £16, so around £160 quid.
Renewal comes through today for £47.24.
As I said we will pay this no problem but to insure both our cars its £343 for the year as apposed to nearly £600. I cant get my head around the fact that the premium has went up £20 a month for alot less(at least in money) work. Maybe it has went up so much becauseof the administration fees of 10 sets of paper work?
Ok, thats the story. Question now.
Can we change policy?
We have been told it is not simple, we have paid for example the excess on her ear infection and if she ever got one again we wouldnt need to pay anything again.
We have also been told that other insurers will not touch us as its been through More Than etc?
Just say we could get her insured elsewhere, would her
Condition of allergies or any other past injuries effect the quote? I must add that the desicion to get her the treatment was our shout and that she did not need it. We just wanted to try and make her more comfortable.
Sorry if this is long winded and I hope I've explained myself well enough. If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows of anything then I'd be ever so greatful for any info.
Thanks for your time!

You can shop around and see what the market has to offer - the previous claims will affect the premium.
Google pet insurance with pre existing conditions for some choices0 -
The allergies and any related illnesses will count as a pre-existing condition and won't be covered if you change insurer. Whether any other conditions are also excluded may depend on how long ago they were, what your vet says, and whether any new insurer is willing to look at the circumstances as opposed to "computer says no."
I would suggest if you're going to get quotes phone up and go through the details rather than do it online.
With regards to the excess paid, does that not reset each year? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Hi guys, I will have to have a look around. Will ring them tomorrow. In my head this seems like its going to be so difficult. Getting other insurances seems so easy.
I don't think mine does reset after the year and like I said I we aimt claim on anything else other than the injections. So you may be right...maybe they have reset... I will ring them tomorrow and get a breakdown. Just £47 a month is alot in my opinion.0 -
If you have a classic policy then you are covered for a fixed sum for each condition until you have used up that amount. In that case you only pay the excess at the start of treatment.
At present Morethan do not know what further claims will be made for her allergy so consider it an ongoing risk ( which can be costly to resolve) so increase your premium accordingly.
If you change to another insurer anything you have consulted your vet about - whether treatment was given or not- and anything that could be connected to it, will be a pre exisitng condition which will be excluded.
Some companies will cover a pre exsisting condition if it has not reccurred or needed treatment for two years.
Petplan are one such company. You can supply them with a medical history from your vet and ask them what they will exclude and for how long.
Petplan premiums tend to be on the high side but they do not increase premiums because you male a claim, which many other companies do.
Petplan offer lifetime cover which means you have a set sum available each year for all your vet fees. This amount is reinstated at the start of each new policy year but you pay an excess for each condition each policy year.
Alternatively, you can consider whether cheaper cover elsewhere and you pay any further treatment for the allergy and ear infection yourself is an option.0 -
Another option is to just put the money you would pay for insurance each month into a savings account and pay for treatment yourself. It does sound like you have paid more money in insurance than you have gotten back over the years (especially if you continue to pay it).0
