Unless its the only ix35 for sale in the Country find another if you have any doubts.

Has it been owned by someone who actually took it off road on a regular basis?

    Find another?

  • If you're this paranoid about buying a used car, maybe buying used isn't for you. Just buy brand new. You sound like a salesman's nightmare.

That is an unusual rfr (the arm insecure) - Personally, I would want to know what is actually going on with the arm, even more so with a leaking shocker on the same side as well.

It is not a common rfr that's for sure.

Pedantic I know but it's the spring that's the shock absorber, the so called "shocky" is actually the damper

Agreed, although there is a valid argument the other way as well seeing as it's the damper that ultimately absorbs (as heat) and dissipates the energy of the shock loading. Left to itself the spring would simply absorb and release, absorb and release, and so on.

In fact, I've got one on the front left of the BMW at the moment that's pretty much doing that. It's not a good effect when you hit 2 or 3 bumps in a row :D (changing them this weekend and the car's going nowhere meanwhile)

Could the insecure mounting have been caused by driving on the failed shock?

No, but vice-versa is eminently likely.
