Why don't we do it the other way?

    In the HOSTS file,
BLOCK all of the 4-billion-odd possible IPv4 addresses, except for those which are known to be OK?

(There might be a problem when IPv6 gets used more extensively, though...)

Because then you wouldnt be able to visit any website without first adding an entry to the hosts file.
That would be the biggest pain in the @ss in the world whilst trying to google something !!

I'm not saying my extremely clever idea doesn't have a few minor difficulties, but it certainly guarantees that you won't have any problems with dodgy websites.

It's at least as intelligent as using the MVPS HOSTS file!

It's as good as rolling your own HOSTS file.

A HOSTS file is a good way to stop a lot of known malware and adware servers

    The spybot application from:https://www.safer-networking.org/
Provides a good preventive hosts file and many other protections.

At the risk of being ridiculed.....
Couldn't you list every possible combination of of IP addresses (except 127.0.0.1 of course) and then remove them as necessary?

It would still be painful to sort out but it should work.

    I'm now ducking for cover......
:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

You mean all 4.3 billion of them ??

Or are you including ipv6's 340 Trillion Trillion Trillion in this too ??

    (yes, trillion trillion trillion)

Your host file would have to be 16 GIGABYTES big just for the first 4.3 billion !!
