If you have worked for the last two tax years and paid sufficient NI contributions and are receiving fit notes from the doctor you can claim contribution based Employment support Allowance. This is not means tested. The only thing that would affect it are personal pensions of over £85 a week.
As regards when you can claim then I should start the claim now. I do not believe that PILON affects contribution based ESA. In any case make the claim now and they will tell you when the claim can actually start and of you are eligible.
If you are not eligible for contribution based ESA then the alternative is income based ESA which would be based on your household income/savings/capital.
You may also be eligible for PIP (google for more information) which is not means tested.0
