How long to drive from Bristol to Marazion (considering the roadworks)

Options
Hi,

We will be travelling to Cornwall (Marazion) this Saturday-I am aware of the roadworks on the A30-can anyone tell me how long it might take from Bristol to Marazion (thinking of stopover at Bristol) or should we risk it and just drive straight from Manchester?

Thanks

I don't know anything about the A30 but bear in mind that there were up to 40 mile tailbacks on the M5 around Almondsbury (M4/M5 interchange) last Saturday.
It shouldn't be as bad next Saturday but I would allow plenty of time to get through the stretch from Gloucester to Weston-Super-Mare.

According to the AA it takes less than 6hrs, but i drive like an old man so it would probably take me 10hrs.

The A30 roadworks at Temple are horrendous. Even worse at the weekends. Most Fridays and Saturdays they are queued back to Altarnun. I would allow an hour to get through them. Depending on where you are starting in Bristol (assuming M5 somewhere) then it would be a 3-3.5 hour journey on a good day. Factor in the traffic up and around Bristol down to Weston Super Mare and then the Temple delays and I think it will be a minimum of 5 hours. Although it does depend on your timings. Get to Temple early and you will go through quite quickly (albeit there is a 40mph limit for the entire length of the works).

I recently did the run from avonmouth to penzance and i left at 4.00am and the journey took three an a half hours, on the friday i left penzance at 10.00am and it took three and a half hours to get to the M5 at exeter where i encountered 28 miles of near stationary traffic and in all the return trip took just under seven hours

so you wont get an answer to your question with an exact time because if you get a clear run you will do it in three to four hours and if you hit traffic it could take you all day

Drive at night when 90% of the people who create tailbacks will be asleep.

My father always drove overnight to Cornwall from South Essex just for this reason

This would be my plan too. But unfortunately the cottage won't allow entry until 3pm. So we'd be hanging around, exhausted and probably ratty! (and with 2 kids...)

We have decided to stop over on Friday night in West Huntspill. Thank you all for your help and advice. I have taken it all on board!

Another side question-which would be better as an alternative route-the A38 or the A39 (should we decide to avoid the A30)?

The A38 will still eventually take you through the Temple roadworks. The A39 won't but you will be stuck in Camelford.

I would stick with the A30, I would try to come very early and if you arrive far too soon for your holiday cottage, you can stop after Temple or even drive to a beach and have some rest before you check-in.

I thought the A38 joins the A30 at Bodmin; so south of the roadworks.
