I,m desperately in need of new specs and just found out that as I have a tax credit exemption certificate I can get a reduction..My optician is very vague about sums--it depends on this & that etc!Can anyone enlighten me from their experience as to what i can expect???

I got my specs from Specsavers (our local one is in with our Asda) I was on WTC and got both my glasses and reading glasses for free from their £39 range - my partner got 2 pairs and as one pair was from their £75 range he had to pay £10 towards them - free eye tests for us both.

You arent supposed to get new ones for 2 years but I had to go back after a year as my eyes were deteriorating (age he said!) and because there was such a difference in my prescription I got another 2 pairs for nothing again!

I took my eldest two kids in to order their new glasses last night and couldn't believe the difference in prices. Daughters are standard lenses and basic frames and cost me £25 on top of the voucher price (the frames aren't anything fancy they just don't have teddies on them!) but sons are executive bifocal with altered frames to take the depth of the lenses and his were free! Last time they priced his glasses the total to the NHS came to over £100 but the difference between their vouchers is only about £20.

Try glasses online, I am not sure whether they take the NHS vouchers - but it would be worth a try.

glasses direct now say on their site that they take NHS vouchers (pity I can't use them for the kids)
