Default Dates are wrong

Options
Hi Hope you can help. I got into financial difficulty some years ago and left the property I was renting and moved back to my parents. I left a debt with British Gas for Gas & electric. I left in December 12 but my credit file shows 6 months late from Feb 13 to Oct 13 before the default is registered. I thought that the default should be registered when th account becomes six months in arrears?
Also for the same debt, I was contacted by collection agency in April 15. I spoke to them and said that i wanted to check with British Gas dates etc. I called British Gas and they couldn't find my account at first and then they told me the account had been removed and the debt was written off. I don't want to ring British Gas now incase they say something different.
Th biggest issue I have is that th mortgage company will only look at us if my defaults are over 3 years old. Are these default dates wrong or can they put them at what date they want?

    Hi Buckers10,
we would normally expect a lender to record a default if the payments due have not been made for six months. Although a lender can record a default before this if they feel the relationship has broken down.

If you feel that the default date on your credit report is incorrect you may wish to contact the credit reference agency who will be able to query the information with the lender on your behalf.

For more about defaults and credit reports take a look at our blog page.

    Kind regards
