Dog insurance problems

I think I know the answer to this, but just in case I don't...

I have a 2 year old cocker spaniel who recently fractured his left elbow. He is slowly recovering after having a plate and screws etc and the insurance (through Debenhams) paid out £2000 as we only had Bronze Insurance and we paid about another £1000 to cover the vets bills. Yes, it's been a lesson about how much vets can cost even when your dog is in his prime and yes I should have taken out lifetime insurance...

The insurance is just coming up for renewal and while thinking about increasing the package to a better one in case of other breakages, I twigged that even if it happens to a different leg, it would be a pre-existing condition. So I checked with Debenhams and yes, it is not covered.

So finally onto my question: as far as any 'fracture of the distal humerus' goes, it is uninsurable at present? Ziggy did have a CT scan of the other elbow and there are no signs of problems - at the moment.

Thanks for any responses

Wendy

Most likely yes, I know petplan will decide something is no longer pre-existing after two years without symptoms. However if you did change to someone like petplan of course every illness symptom he has ever had will be excluded for two years, so it is a tricky one.

I'm glad hes on the mend, is there something physically wrong to cause the break? I only ask as your last sentence reads as though his other arm will suffer the same in the future.
  • Yes, I've found a couple of places that would insure after 2 years.

Hopefully he won't have the same problem in the other front leg, but this is fairly common in spaniels apparently, due to 'incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle/intercondylar fissure' rather than any one off big trauma. He was just running normally - for him! There were 2 other cocker spaniels being admitted for the same surgery on the day we returned for post op check. Be warned...

Someone on another forum had their greyhound's leg injured (badly cut) by someone else using a wire flexi lead and this meant to an insurer exclusion of any leg problem in the future, even though the other owner's carelessness would have no influence on a future injury.

If the fracture was due to a genetic condition then yes it would be an excluded condition.

If it was caused by trauma , may be not.

Any insurance you go with make sure you get ot in writing from the underwriter that the other leg would be covered for the same condition.
