    Perhaps he was just stressed or dealing with something serious and acted inappropriately in the moment which is not normally their character.

    It could be, or equally he could just have been an arrogant !!!! who needed taking down a peg or two !.

    The chap behind started it, he had no reason to say anything to this person. Had they stood in the queue and got to the cashier and been the wrong type of customer they would have just been turned away like the OP was.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
