Car insurance - don't know cost of previous claim

Hi

Would welcome advice. I am shopping around for new car insurance but do not know the cost of a claim I made earlier this year for a minor accident. My insurer has told me its reserve which is low but says that they may not be able to give me the actual cost for some time although I need insurance fairly soon.

Thanks

Either put "don't know" or "approx." down or contact your chosen insurer and explain

While I appreciate that having a claim will increase premiums, presumably insurers do care to some extent about the type of claim and costs involved - I guess as you say, I will need to contact them.

This really annoys me - a family member had the same thing - her car was fixed under an insurance claim. The garage invoiced the insurer directly and the insurer refused to tell her how much it was, which made it hard to shop around at renewal.

I had a claim last month, and when my hubby went to pick the car up I asked him to try to casually ask the garage what the total cost was. He managed it so we know what they've billed our insurer. ;)

In my experience many insurers don't ask how much the claim was for - they only care about the fact that you made it, and whether or not it was a fault claim. Especially if you get the quote direct from their website rather than a comparison site.

Suggest you get some quotes from a comparison site using a best guess for the amount of the claim. Then choose the cheapest* few insurers and either get a quote direct from their websites and see if they actually ask the amount, and if they do phone them up and explain that you don't know the exact sum.

(*Or better still, choose the cheapest ones whose cover is adequate for your needs and who don;t have a reputation for terrible customer service. Never choose insurance (or any other product, for that matter) purely because it's cheap.)
