Smoke alarm made screeching noise

My home has three smoke alarms, backed up by the mains electricity installed by the builders, 7 years ago. Each of them has had its battery replaced about 5 times each.

In the small hours of this morning. I got woken up by one of them screeching with a gap of 5 seconds. It wasn't the low battery chirp, which sounds every 40 seconds.

So I removed the alarm and battery from the alarm and it screeched twice more (a little quieter though)without the battery:eek: I thought it was going to go on forever.

What caused this? Is the battery gone? Is the smoke alarm gone?

What does the manual say about audible warnings?

Is it a combined smoke/CO alarm?

The manual says nothing and I don't have gas.

How old is the smoke alarm? Some of them require changing every few years (well at least the sensor) check to see if there is a label stuck inside or the original instructions leaflet/manual.

Ours would loudly beep when the back - up battery came loose. Putting back in firmly solved the problem.

Firstly they are not "backed up by the mains" - they are mains powered with battery backup (which is known as a Grade D system).

Secondly, I hope they were installed by an Electrician and not a builder!

ALL of them require replacement - typically after 10 years.

I've had this before, it was caused by dust in the sensor, try giving it a good vac. For some reason it would always happen when the sun hit it in the morning which I never did understand!

I'd also test it to make sure it still functions, if in doubt replace it.
