Self employed or PAYE?

Not sure if this is the right forum. Please move if it isn't.

Currently run own part time business selling greetings cards so am Self emp for that but have just got a new role as a PA this morning. It is filling in for someone who is on long term sick so don;t know how long this is going to be for. It is a property developer who runs his business from home. I will not be doing set hours each week they will depend on my availability and the work load.

My feeling is that to keep my flexibility I am better to be self employed that way I don't get paid if I don't work. This makes it easier to say I can't work, I don't want to be too tied. Not bothered about holiday pay etc more concerned with not working in school hols etc.

To complicate matters I have got an interview on Monday for a part tiem job at the local council which I really woudl liek and this woudl obviously be PAYE. So what do I do?

All suggestions welcome, it is all a bit mad I thought I was going for an interview and ended up working for 2.5 hours. Am going back tomorrow.

I agree it might be easier if you were self-employed for this job you've accidentally started, but it's not your decision, it's HMRC's. Try searching their website for the set of questions you can work through to see which you are, or phone your local office for advice. You might be OK, but if the person who you're covering for is an employee, you might not be!

Try this HMRC booklet, particularly the questions on pages 5 and 6. It is likely that you should be employed for both roles, but this should help.

That's probably the thing I was thinking of, but I was too tired to go look for it ... :o
