The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

  • I'm no expert on this but if you managed to connect two monitors to one VGA or DVI port, surely he would see the same on both monitors? I thought to connect two monitors you needed a graphics card with two ports that supports dual monitors.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Same here (no expert). But what he wants to do is run a graphics program where the tools are on one screen but the image is on the other (thereby leaving more of the image visible.

My PC has dual VGA ports (is that right? - lots of pin things) but he has only one.

I've assumed that as he only wants to view one application - but on two screens - he doesn't need anything other than the ability to plug in two monitors.

But I may be wrong - hence the request here!

I've got a single (cheapo, non-gaming) graphics adaptor that has a standard 9-pin VGA d-sub socket (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dsub) and a DVI socket (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface).

I've got a DVI->VGA adapter, so effectively have two VGA sockets.

Even though it's just one graphics card, I am able to get the image to span two monitors.

I'm pretty sure (though again, I'm no expert!) that if you just get a splitter cable, you'll get exactly the same image on two screens.

If you were to replace the graphics card with something like this (btw, I'm not recommending this card in particular - just using it as an example):

...then got an adapter like this:
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CAB-DVIVGA

... you should be able to plug in two VGA-type monitors and span the image across two screens.

    Hope this helps...

It does...of course the splitter would just duplicate the image! Thanks, saved some money there.

I think he needs a new graphics card etc.

    Now, anyone seen any bargains?

If you had two monitors on some ort of splitter cable I don't see how the PC would be able to differentiate them. I think, as esuhl says, the only answer is a card with two ports on it. If the PC has onboard graphics you may be able to add a cheap card with one port and do it that way.
