I'm trying to sort out a test for my husband who is a qualified electrician(16th edition course passed etc) .He now needs a part p qualification. He does this sort of work all the time and its just red tape so he needs the final exam/assessment ,I rung the NICEIS and assessment that he needs is £458.25 which is a lot more than i though. Is this the general price for this is is there anywhere else you can have this assessment(where they view your work etc) done cheaper?

if he is wanting to gain part p approval with the niceic he needs on top of the 450 quid you have said, 2million public liability insurance, a compliants procedure, a suitable test equipment which also has to be calibrated to there standards ie once a month on a known source, he then i would assume if he doesnt emply anybody be his own qualified supervisor and keep his knowedege of regulations and testing abilities up to date.
a ccopy of bs7671 £60 i think
all 8 copyies of guidance note at £20 each
and any other documents/british standards books in relation to the work he is doing. ie fire alam bs book costs £240 inc vat
a pad of certificates would also cost 35 per pad inc vat you need several types of these as well so probebly 4x 35 quid
to then register for trustmark status anouther 40 per year if required.
note if he joins in march for example, the renewel date is april the 5th so 450 quid would only get him a months registration before anouther 450 quid would have to be paid.
Then if he wanted to have test and inspection (peridioc test and inspections)staus under the domestic installer scheme he would have to pay anouther 450 pounds to have 3 examples of his work tested and inspected although you dont need this part just to be part p approved.
on top of that lot you would have to pay two seperate fees each and every time a job however small or large to submit for part p approval, this includes a 6 year guarantee which the niceic insist on,MORE MONEY>
to conclude, im registered as a domestic installer and an approved contractor it costs me approx includeing my wasted time which i could have been charging for £4000 there abouts each and every year just to comply.
i say unless your subcontracting or working for a company/council etc that req registration dont do it unless you have to.
one thing which gets me is the enginner when he attends only spends .5 of a day for your 450 quid hmm id like to earn 900 quid per day wouldnt you!.
t
he niceic are now just a money wagon imho, although i have to belong to them because i work and do callout for insuance and several housing assoctions .

Thank you for the feedback. We didn't realise the april bit where it is omportant when you get the part p. It is pretty unfair really to charge that much. I agree that its important to get the part p but don't know how they can justify the price they charge, especially as some are like a weeks course for £800!!!0
