Student Renting, how does council tax work?

Hi there,
Might be abit of a daft question, but just want some kind of confirmation.
Me and my partner will be starting University in September, both as full time students. We are looking to privately rent a flat rather than use student accommodation (Going to different Uni's, so want somewhere in the middle).
If we rent a flat in a building with, as an example, other flats with non-students, are will still exempt from paying council tax? Or is it based around those living in the entire building?
(I had a look at my local councils website, but it wasn't much help!)
Thank you for your help

You will be exempt. Each flat in the building will have its own council tax bill. You will have to,inform the local authority that you are students.0

It's based on the property you are renting so your house (if you rent an entire house or flat). It's different if you rent a room though.
In your case you would both be exempt. You will need to inform the council tax department at your local council. You may need a certificate or similar from your university /course provider for the council.

All you need to do is forward a 'proof of student' letter from the Uni for both of you. As above
It's really easy!
