Sometimes you end up with less with potential for more down the line.

If you are in the same pay band then I wouldn't expect a huge immediate change but when you get the offer you can see what is said, and remember that it may be open to some negotiation.

I am asking the Q as I am js prepping myself for what is likely to be a realistic expectation for an offer. And to know how best to play it, when the offer comes in!

Whatever the answer is, it's likely to be the same for any promotion in that company - so if you turn down this TL position, don't think that another TL position will pay any better and you might not get another chance to climb that rung of the ladder. Perhaps it'd be better to grab this opportunity while it's being offered?

Sometimes internal promotions carry no payrise at all.

You make a good point here. And I will ultimately take the role. But sometimes you just want to know what is generally acceptable...in case of need to try and negotiate.

  • I've had 3 promotions internally up a grade each time, 2 within the same team. First one took a year for the new salary to be approved and was only 1k (5%) more. The second took 6 months and was a further 10% increase. The third role in a new department has a much higher ceiling but the max they were authorised to even ask senior management for was 15% which is what I ended up with. I was already at the lowest salary of the new grade and their initial offer was 0%, which I negotiated up to the maximum 15%

Sooo it turns out to be a 10% rise! Which from the feedback given above seems ok.

But secretly I was hoping for a bit more! Havent yet signed, said I need to think about it.......
Wondering if I can twist their arm into any more...?

Did you suggest 10% or did they give you that figure without asking you what you expected? If that is the first number thrown into the circle then you could be cheeky and ask for 11 or 12, but you'd need to be very tactical about it. There are a loooot of salary negotiation guides on the internet, really great resources.
