Hi all,

I've just come across a company called Hippo Electronics (hippoelectronics.co.uk) and noticed that they have some incredible deals available on Sony PS4, Xbox etc (eg: 1TB Sony PS4 with Fifa 16, 2 other games plus a second controller for £259).

I was very tempted to buy, but discovered that their payment system looks a bit suspicious. When you place an order, you receive an email from them confirming the order and saying "While our sale is on we only accept Faster Payments (bank transfer). Please pay the Order Total via internet banking or telephone banking, using the bank details below, ensuring you quote your full name as reference. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your order". Looking at their website, there doesn't seem to be any other way of paying - and the sale appears to apply to all items they sell.

Has anyone on here ever bought anything from Hippo Electronics before or found another company who requests for payments in this way? The PS4 deals are amazing, but I'm really not comfortable about this method of payment. :(

I agree it does all sound a bit dubious. Thanks Browntoa.

Just to update this thread, a lot of people have started leaving negative comments about this company on repdigger.com, including one guy who placed an order and hasn't received his stuff, so it does seem to be a con.
Anyone considering buying from Hippo Electronics please be warned.

The hippoelectronics.co.uk website has been taken down now.
    It was clearly a scam.
  • I'm shattered! I bought an xbox one through hippo electronics last week Monday. This was going to be my son's birthday present which is on Saturday 6 August. I decided to e-mail just to confirm the delivery that was going to be today to get my e-mail bounce back I then proceeded to phone them and their number is blocked and going to check their website I see its not available. I have worked so hard saving for this I'm in tears. I'm new to the UK coming from SA I was recommended to have a look at their site. I know nothing about Xboxes etc. Can someone advise what to do? I feel do stupid and the ironic thing is when doung payment I asked my bank are payments like this acceptable and was told yes. I've never bought online before, do I lay a fraud case if I don't receive it? Anyway to contact this company is proving fruitless.
    Absolutely shattered

I am absolutely devastated, my son ordered a ps4 last week and we were to expect delivery today. I received an email yesterday to say my payment had been cleared and the ps4 was on its way, so too find out it's a scam is heartbreaking. My 15 year old son worked his socks off to pay £259.99 for this ps4 only to be told this morning he's been ripped off !!! He is absolutely heartbroken, to say I am angry is an understatement
  • I feel your pain!! We have phoned the bank and said because it was a faster payment there is nothing they can do. Last week Monday when payment had been made I phoned the number and spoke to this guy. I questioned him on concerns and he said because he uses Royal Mail he couldn't guarantee a time. I'm still learning how things work in the UK. Feel devastated and angry to have worked and saved for this Xbox. I'm so sorry your son has also lost out
