Have I Got PPI?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm confused about how you find out if you have PPI.
I tend to only keep 5 years of paperwork and therefore have no record of whether or not I've been missold PPI. Claims companies seem to only need a minimal information (name and address?) in order to find out if you have a complaint.
My question is, if I have no paperwork, should I scrap the idea? If not, are there resources that I can use to find out or am I limited to using a claims company?
It's the Egg credit card PPI that has sparked my interest as I've had one since 2003, but I've also had numerous loans over the years.

It will say on your paperwork, especially your statements, if you had PPI.
Claims companies simply follow the same process as you, but take a 40% cut for providing the stamp. You may be able to source your own stamps locally for less than they will charge.0 -

That is what they like you to think. It is BS though.
Most bank/card providers only need your name and address history to find your records. Sometimes older records are harder but most are fine with name and address.
CMCs will tell you that you have a complaint every time. Even if you don't. They have nothing to lose.My question is, if I have no paperwork, should I scrap the idea? If not, are there resources that I can use to find out or am I limited to using a claims company?
CMCs use the same free of charge complaints process you would use if you did it. So, why not do it yourself. The success rate on complaints is higher for own complaints.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Thanks dunstonh, so what would a recommended approach be for an Egg Card customer with no records?
However, if records no longer exist then it doesn't matter whether you employ a company or not as your "complaint" will be over before it's begun.
The same is true if your enquiry reveals that you didn't have PPI (or never paid any).0
