AXA Home Insurance - Itemisation Question

Hi

I'm doing our home insurance renewal which is due soon, currently with Zurich, but every home insurance I've had in the past for contents has required me to specify individual high value items that need to be specifically called out for insurance purposes (engagement rings/watches etc). My current cheapest quote is with AXA but they don't seem to need any of these items specified individually, as long as each item is less than £5000 and the total of those items is less than £25,000, they are covered.

I know that this may be a stupid question but I want to make sure my items are specifically covered correctly, so surely a non itemised system is open to abuse and is not as easy to prove loss in the event of something happening? I have insurance value certificates etc for the high value things, but I just feel a bit uneasy about NOT specifying these items up front.

Can someone confirm that this is fine, and it's ok to not have them specified up front, and that if there is a loss, we would tell AXA the details of the item and provide certs at that time etc?

Thanks for your help. I need to buy this today so any assistance would be great.

Itemising items doesn't provide any proof you actually own them !

Axa not wanting itemisation is nothing to worry about.

(Check that you are getting the cover you require.)

Ok I guess you're right in that there is no proof of ownership by itemising them, but why do some want it itemised and others not? Is there a reason?

For a lot it makes little difference. For a lot, its sort of an 'honesty box' sort of thing - the theory being that if you declared them at renewal, you probably do actually own them.

What it is designed to do is prevent a situation where you start telling the insurer "the scumbags took my Rolex, my platinum engagement ring, my Faberge egg, my Picasso.... etc".
