Direct debit set up in one account 'forwarded' to a different bank and account?

I was called last month by some sales person telling me I could have X for free if I agreed to sign up to the service (A lottery syndicate if I recall right) - I thought why not! and gave them the bank details for an old barclays account I no longer use.

A few days ago I was charged on my new bank account, halifax, the amount that was supposed to be the direct debit for the barclays account. I checked the direct debit list for this halifax account and it had somehow jumped from the barclays account to the halifax account!

I have confirmed with their customer services that I set it up with a barclays account and he doesn't know how it was taken from the halifax account. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is it fraudulent?

So how did Barclays know to transfer this DD to the Halifax account?

They shouldn't have done. I closed down the barclays account months ago.

If you switched it, that's the reason.

Any payments or direct debits etc. set up on an account that has been switched get forwarded on to the new account as part of the switch agreement.

    Taken from Halifax website

    https://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/switch-to-halifax/Default.asp

At the bottom is says ''For 36 months after your switch, payments sent to or requested from your old account will be redirected to your new account.' - This includes any DD set up, payments received into the old account, refunds for example.

    Issue solved, :-)
