Loft conversion affecting home insurance price

Hello there. I wonder if anyone might be able to help me?
Our home insurance with Kwikfit ends this weekend and I am in the process of renewing. Even though we have been with them for years they have suddenly tried to whack the price up.
Firstly they discovered we live on the River Wear - even though they have had our address and postcode for years. Probably five years in all that we have been with them.
So they decided to try and put the price up as a result of that. When I informed them we are about to have a loft a conversion done they had a fit.
After a number of calls and passages to specialist handlers they wanted to put our insurance up from around £300 to nearly £800. So I told them were to go.
Today having agreed a deal with the AA the moment I mentioned the loft conversion work was about to begin on Monday they simply refused to deal with us and withdrew the offer.
We have the proper planning permission from the council and we are using a reputable company with their own insurances etc, but I feel I am about to be passed from pillar to post by varying companies until they have removed my eyes!

Off the peg online insurers won't insure you whilst the work is ongoing.
See if a local broker (not Swinton) can help
(If your policy in place now runs past next Monday, then bear in mind the building work will mean that you are uninsured from then)0 -
The policy runs out on Sunday!0

OK - So bear in mind you will have no cover on Monday unless you resolve this0
