I'm sorry you have to make this decision, I know from experience how hard it is!

We lost a cat due to kidney disease last month. She went from rude health to desperately ill in less than a week, so I didn't have much time to get my head round what was happening! It was long enough to know that her time had come though, as I think you will know too.

If you feel you need it (or anyone else here who might benefit), Blue Cross have a bereavement service that I have heard good reports of

So sorry I know how you feel .Last year my 18 year old female cat was diagnosed with a tumor in her
liver. they tried meds and she seemed to pick up but was still loosing weight, She just didn't look her self. That was in May but over the next few months she had more issues and every time I couldn't bring my self to let her go. But in November she stopped eating and was drinking all the time and would only drink from water in the garden, On the Sunday I watched her and felt so sorry for her to have to go outside and she looked at me to say help me,So Monday 9th I took her back to the vets and put her to sleep it was so peaceful I stayed with her all the time and held her,The vet wrapped her in a fluffy blanket and curled her round so she looked like she was just sleeping,We took her home and buried her with our other cats in the garden, We also had to put our other cat to sleep this year as she had a stone in her bladder she was 23 years old but she such a good companion to me.
I had to do this on my birthday in April as I could not let her suffer over the weekend, The most unselfish thing you can do is not let your cat suffer and I know it is better to let them go before they get too bad as its not nice to see them in pain. It's never easy to decide when. By the way we got a rescue cat from cats protection in December and she is beautiful and has characteristics of both cats we love her

Not heard anymore. I wonder what has happened, hope you are ok OP
  • Hi all, sorry for not updating - I was very grateful for all the replies. Seb aka Puss passed away on Aug 10th, I had to make the decision. Tbh I still don't know if I let him go too early and I feel very guilty as although the putting to sleep was peaceful, he did fight when they were putting in the catheter into his paw. I could hear the yowls from the waiting room :( I don't blame the vet they were very kind to me - they let me bring him in at closing when everyone else was gone and they didn't rush me or puss. The night before he couldn't find anywhere comfortable to sleep and slept on the toilet lid. Also the tumour started to affect his eye which was now drooping slightly. I didn't want him to suffer the tumour doing any more damage. I am still very upset writing this I miss him terribly!

So sorry. It is the last kind thing we can do for our much loved pets.

    The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

    So sorry for your loss

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
