Council Tax Question

Hi, We are about to exchange on our first property and hopefully complete next week.
We are currently in rented on a rolling contract, I havent given notice yet as we aren't due to exchange until tomorrow. Once we complete we will still have roughly 3 weeks left in the rented property to clean/make good etc every thing which works well for us.
Will I have to pay 2 lots of council tax next month? One for the new property and one for the rental?

Yes.
As soon as you complete on the purchased property you become liable for the Council Tax thereon. You will also remain liable for the CT on the rental property for as long as you occupy, or if a later date, up to the day your rental payment covers.
Some councils do give a discount for unoccupied property, so you should check with the relevant council, as it is their prerogative if a discount is offered. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
You are liable for council tax on your rented accommodation until the end of the tenancy. (ie, in your case the date that you use in your notice according to your tenancy agreement - have you checked how much notice you have to give).
You are also liable for council tax on your new property from the date of completion (the date you can move in)
It is possible that the council will give you a discount/exemption on the new property if it is substantially unfurnished (for example) Check their website and enquire.0 -
Thought that would probably be the case but hoped otherwise :-)
We have to give one month notice, our tenancy ends August 31st and we are hoping to complete on the 5th and finally move in over the weekend of the 6th and 7th0
