Hi there,

New user here, wee question;

My wife bought a Renault car on hire purchase about ten years ago and paid it off in full over 7 years. Not being particularly contract savy - is there likely to be ppi that can be claimed back from the dealership?

    Check your paperwork, check your memory - did she sign up for PPI?

    Nothing can be "claimed back" - if you had PPI and have a valid complaint reason then complain, if you are not sure, do some investigation like ringing up the dealer and asking or doing a DSAR for all the records they hold on her (will cost £10) and see if the paperwork mentions it

  • @Nasqueron - Thank you for your assistance. We no longer have the paperwork, although we think she bought some kind of payment protection. We will go to the dealer and/or complete a DSAR which (having not heard of it until you mentioned it and having now looked up what one is) sounds like a good start. I'm much obliged.

    @societys child - it was hoped that someone with more financial experience than myself would perhaps know if it was the norm for payment protection insurance to be sold as part of an HP deal. Thanks for condescending to answer.

    You can do the DSAR by post, don't need to go to the dealer, they have 40 days to comply - might as well just ring them though, if it was 10 years ago it's after the date they became regulated so they ought to have records of some sort, it'll save you £10 if they can confirm what you paid for.

    Do check carefully though, car dealers sell all sorts of cover including GAP insurance, wheel cover, tyre cover, paint cover etc so worth double checking. With car finance the company can include stuff like GAP with the finance meaning you pay interest on it as part of the loan, it's a bit naughty. Possible they did sell PPI as well - have a search of this forum for the name of the dealership and see if anyone else had it so you can establish if that's the sort of thing they sold or if it was another type of cover.

    No company will entertain a PPI complaint (or query) if you turn up in person. Write to them in the first instance. You'll only need to send (and pay) for a SAR if they don't respond to your enquiries or if you doubt the truth of their response.

    Everyone's experiences are different, so it's not at all helpful to your potential complaint to enquire whether it was the "norm"
