Holiday Nightmare looming

Hi,

I am looking for some advice about my holiday which I am about to take with my family.

Background

Last year we travelled to Aqua Coral Sea resort Egypt which has now been closed due to an outbreak of the Crypto parasite. Having had our holiday ruined by sickness last year, trip advisor is now reporting that this years resort has a similar sickness bug. I have contacted Thomson who advised me to report any sickness to the rep in resort, I have also sent an email explaining my concerns to which they have stated they will return my enquiry within 8 days, that's fine except we travel in 10.

Surely Thompson have a duty of care to ensure the product they provide will keep my family safe and well.

My question

Rather than risk another ruined holiday am I entitled to a refund or a change of hotel?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

No, you're not entitled to a refund or change of hotel unless you can specifically prove that every single person caught the "sickness" from that specific hotel (which is pretty much impossible). Potential illness isn't a reason you would be covered under a travel insurace policy (not this kind of illness anyway). If you cancelled you would likely lose all your money. It is also pretty unlikely that you would get two seperate cases of the same parasite in two seperate years - crypto is usually water borne, so stay out of water and only drink pretreated bottled water, no ice. It can also be chlorine resistant, so pools may be a no go if you're that worried.

Just take normal precautions, wash hands regularly, take sanitiser, don't eat anything that you're unsure of, stay away from dirty places and water that may not be treated.

Thomson aren't responsible for you not wanting to go; if it is crypto again ( you said it was similar, but you don't say what it is - if it has indeed been identified), then general precautions should keep you safe.

Just to add, you can also boil the water to get rid of most water borne pathogens. A travel kettle will work fine.

  • Is this the resort in Nabq?

Can't understand how Thomson are getting you there as there are no flights to Sharm at the moment.

The only Egyptian holiday availability is at Hurghada unless you are willing to fly internally or transfer by coach/car.
  • Why would you return to a place you had such a bad experience at?

OP - can you clarify your post as to where you're staying.

As post#5 highlights, the Aqua Coral Sea is in Nabq, Sharm el Sheikh and Thomson/First Choice are not to Sharm operating at the moment.

Do you mean a different hotel/resort to your holiday last year?

That all said, poster #2 summarises your position well.
  • Which hotel/resort is it?

We got it too, the chemist in Luxor sold us some tiny pills called Entocid for 30p which cured us immediately.

Almost everyone got it, judging by the way they'd do a very quick walk across the room, whilst trying to smile, & trying not to run, but failing

We've been a couple of times without major problems, however the issue with all inclusives is common across much of the world.

Always eaten out and fresh wherever I've been and rarely had any issues with food.

We've done a lot of All Inclusive in Spain, Turkey and Tunisia, from 3 to 5 star, never had any problems.
