Barclays have lost my cheque

After waiting the 6 weeks for my cheque to clear, I asked Barclays what is going on, first online (who told me to go to the branch) then at the branch last week. So, basically they have lost the cheque and I have to provide a photocopy of it as proof. It had not occurred to me to do this as no bank has ever lost my cheque before, lesson learned.
I do have my copy of the receipt they gave me which includes all the details with the branch's stamp and date but they're saying it isn't good enough!
I will ask the person who sent me the cheque to cancel it and send a new one (and I will take it to Santander instead). Additional paperwork and communication and a 3 month delay.
I am quiet angry with how Barclays has handled this and will switch my account at the soonest opportunity. In addition to closing my account, are there any other effective methods to complain or show my disappointment/anger with Barclays?

Don't close your account. They wouldn't notice.
Compensation for the error.
Compensation for failing to advise you it had happened.
Compensation for your travel costs and phone costs to resolve it.
Compensation for time at £10 an hour.
Get asking. Escalate to the FOS if they don't offer enough.0 -

So, raise a complaint, citing the concise details/timeline, the inconvenience you've suffered, any financial loss you've suffered, and state quite clearly what outcome you seek.
And then, if you still feel the same once they've resolved your complaint (or not!), change banks!0 -
How much is the cheque for?
Is it or was it drawn on a UK bank or abroad?
If abroad then you have no leg to stand on as you are asking them to negotiate or collect the funds from the foreign bank (or their agent bank).
They physically have to send the cheque by post and we all know how things go missing in the post!
You might ask why did Barclays did not send the cheque by courier - the answer is cost - would you be prepared to pay the charges?
Once the drawer of the cheque has confirmed that it has not been debited to his account would it not be easier for the funds to be sent directly to your account electronically?0
