Restless hard drive

in Techie Stuff
Just returned from my holidays and turned my computer back on.trying to do some stuff on the internet and I have noticed that my hard drive is constantly working at full tilt.Any ideas please?

If you have XP with automatic updates and you have been away for a while it could just be updating and will calm down eventually. Otherwise:
1. Do a Disk Cleanup followed by a Defrag. A better disk cleanup application is CCleaner which is free (Google it.)
2. Do a full anti-virus scan.
3. If the disk is still busy right-click on the Taskbar and open the Task Manager. Check the Processes and Performance task for anything which looks like it's hogging processor time.
It is possible that your hard drive is on the way out and a high number of read/write errors is causing multiple retries. It might therefore be prudent to back up any valuable data you have.0
