Airbnb - asking for a discount

Has anyone ever tried messaging a host (it's an entire property)and asking for a discount?
I'm travelling soon and I've seen a couple of properties that are just out of my price range. If they're still free a day or two before I go, I'm tempted to ask for a discount as it's a 5 night stay, but I don't know if this is being TOO cheeky.
Any hints or tips?
Thanks

I stayed at a place recently in Nicaragua that had its own website, and was also listed on Airbnb.
I booked via the private website and avoided Airbnb's commission, and got an airport pick-up and drop-off throw in.0 -
Yes, I've done it. The host can make you an offer.0

Just out of interest, was it a reasonable discount?NiftyDigits wrote: »Yes, I've done it. The host can make you an offer.0

Ooooh, I have started threads about Airbnb. At last another one. If you don't ask, you wont get. I decided against Airbnb as the one at Hyde Park in London, had a lot of cancelled bookings the day before! I stick with Hotel.com as you get a free night for every 10 you book. You can carry them over.
Do let us all know how you get on.

They had an apartment with two rooms, rented separately. I wanted both, as I didn't want to share facilities with anyone else. So I negotiated a price for the whole apartment, instead of paying for both rooms separately.0
