Declined Barclaycard with spurious reasons

Hello, I'm hoping someone might have some advice for this puzzled card tart. Apologies for the tedious detail - I think it sets in context Barclaycard's poor explanation and my confusion. The essence of my problem is in the last paragraph for anyone in a hurry :j

I've been a card tart as per Martin's advice for several years, happily managing my debts with only one missed payment dating back to 2011. The time has come for me to shift again so using the MSE eligibility checker applied to Barclaycard for 0% balance transfer deal. My application was provisionally accepted and I sent my ID documents by post.

At this point I was declined and told that one of the documents I provided did not show my name and address (it did), that there wasn't much information held for me at my current address and that I should check my credit report with Equifax. So I:

1. Waited for my document to come back from Barclaycard in the post, highlighted the name and address and sent it back.
2. Paid for my report from Equifax and corrected two address errors made by Nationwide and M&S Bank. Otherwise, credit history looks in top shape, credit accounts in use with no missed payments, only 1 check in the last 12 months for car insurance, electoral role up to date etc. My current application was for a balance transfer not additional credit so affordability should be reasonable?

I was declined again and told that my name and address as laid out on the documents didn't match EXACTLY (they did). There is no further appeal so I have written to Barclaycard for more information as the call centre knows nothing. This was 6 weeks ago so I don't expect a response.

From all this I presume that my address is the problem. Due to a relationship breakdown I am at my third address since 2013 but always keep my records up to date, update the electoral role etc. After my last move, I applied for credit within 8 weeks and was successful. I've been at my current address for 9 months so I'm puzzled about why this is now a problem. I do receive a high number of debt letters for a previous tenant which I return to sender but thought that this wouldn't affect me personally?

Any suggestions gratefully received. Not knowing what has gone wrong is very worrying.

A balance transfer is always an application for additional credit - without the additional credit, you cannot transfer, so affordability may be an issue, depending on your total limits, balances and income.

Previous tenants won't be an issue.

You say you checked Equifax. Is that definitely who Bcard use for card applications?

That's helpful thank you. It wasn't given as a reason but not sure that means anything.

Barclaycard directed me to Equifax which is why I used them although they refer to them as "one of" the agencies they use, they didn't name the others.

Have a look at Experian and Call Credit (Noddle) - particularly if Equifax had address issues.

Just for comparison or can I do something different with these?

They're different CRAs - there are three in the UK and different companies report to, and search, different ones. I would expect someone as large as Barclaycard to be using all three at different points.

You could, for instance, find a defaulted account on one which is not on the others.

Thanks for the suggestion. Noddle says it doesn't hold enough information on me to produce a report; Experian rates me (today anyway) as 976/999. I've applied for my statutory report but it says there's a 4 day wait

Lenders now have visibility on such activity. Barclaycard may well have decided to curtail new business for people playing the system.
