I always said that if I won the lottery I'd open an animal sanctuary, and as that would pretty much use up the rest of the cash, there's not a lot else I'd do - although I would clear ALL of the debts first.
We didn't necessarily move to our dream house in the country last year, but we have moved to our dream village. It isn't pretty - it was built for the mineworkers - but there's a heart of gold among the community. Money can't buy that anywhere, and property doesn't come up that often.spendy/she/her ***DEBT-FREE DATE: 11 NOVEMBER 2022!*** Highest debt: £35k (2006) MY WINS: £3,541 CASH; £149 Specsavers voucher; free eye test; goody bag from Scottish Book Trust; tickets to Grand Designs Live; 2-year access to Feel Amazing App (worth £100); Home Improvement & Renovation Show tickets; £50 to spend on chocolate; Harlem Globetrotters tickets; Jesus Christ Superstar tickets + 2 t-shirts; Guardians of the Galaxy goody bag; Birmingham City v Barnsley FC tickets; Marillion tickets; Dancing on Ice tickets; Barnsley FC v Millwall tickets0 -
Wow you guys have really thoight this out!! I can't think of anything major I would need, but what I want is probably a different matter!!
It would be nice not having to think about spending extra on things, like can we really afford granite work tops etc etc. I would get my kitchen built to my own specifications with whatever gadgets I fancied(so would still do home baking). I would love to live overlooking a river/sea/fields (would love to 'live off the land')but equally like my neighbours and money doesn't guarentee (?SP) good neighbours. Would definitely get a cleaner as I spend too much time online and the house really needs a good clean!!! More holidays and family time would be great(but we do have great times together without the cash). Would get bored not working at all so might not do same job (though it is good fun in my clinic!) or something voluntary.
What an interesting question apprentice tycoon!!
Thanks for making me think!0 -

It's a perfect indication that my mind is wandering AND I am not WORKING when I SHOULD be - this money saving is costing me money!!!0 -
Hi All,
Working in a newsagents, you hear loads of stories of what people would do if they won, the main thing does appear to be paying off debts (mainly mortgages) and seeing all the family right and on a nice holiday.
Not sure what I'd do myself, as I live at home with parents (and no one in family has a mortagage), but my brother rents, so I'd get him a house near to were he works, and get myself a house/flat, but still in Liverpool somewhere, as I think its great here!
Probably learn to drive and buy a car, something cool like a new shape VW Beetle probably (couldn't trust myself with an Audi TT!), after that other than investing no idea really! I do think it would be fun though going up to your bank with the cheque, and ask for the manager!
Cheers
Stevecompleted Uni in 2004 without any student debt - woohoo!0 -
I'd quit working, pay off the mortgage, make sure the family is OK, then put it in a high interest savings account (using Martins advise from on here of course:money: ) and then I'd have a good long think about what to do with the rest
(while living off the interest)
I certainly wouldn't give up the old style cooking and baking and I'd probably buy loads of expensive gadgets like a panasonic bread maker with a nut dispenser
I'd love to move to the countryside and have loads of room to grow my own fruit and veg and have a couple of chickens and a lil'galtizz or 2 to collect the eggs :j. I'd have lots of holidays exploring the world and pay someone to come and water my tomato plants because my Mum who does it for me sometimes has a knack for killing them off
Might have to by a lottery ticket for tonight now. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
cool thread!
I think it would give me the chance to do even more old-style things as the first thing I'd do is ditch my job! Cooking, baking, keeping chickens, having a veg garden... :j I think I'd still do old-style shopping but I'm with Apprentice Tycoon on M&S food. Mmmm.
That would all come after I'd travelled around the world of course!!0 -

Great question!
Lovely reading all your responses!
For me, Old Style really is more about lifestyle than money - as with a lot of us. Not wanting to waste money is good common sense, and I think we all share that. I'd be no more inclined to waste money if I had £5 million. I'd still think £4 for a plain T-ship is enough, and I would never pay £50 just because some designer thinks their name is worth that much. So my values wouldn't change. I would still look for bargains.
I would still cook from scratch and bake, but moreso, as I would certainly quit work, and have time to grow veg, write, read and cook all day! However, the supermarkets could take run and jump, as ALL my food would come from local suppliers and/or health food shops, as I could afford it!
The bus would cease to be my transport, as I would treat myself to a Green car to get around all the farm shops.
And of course I would buy an old farmhouse with land, and have chickens, goats, ducks, geese, a pond, fruit trees...oh yes!
I wouldn't want more "things" - just the basics, a home that I own without debt (I don't stand a chance even with a mortgage!), a bit of land, a source of income and the freedom to do what I want to do.
(seeing family and friends right, too, of course)

I would invest a large lump of it and every year the money that the lump raised would go to a charity of my choice.
I wouldn't want a car that would draw attention to me or cause the anxiety of having my car scratched or damaged. I wouldn't buy a boat , but would hire one with crew when I fancied. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the upkeep or mooring.
I would like a chef now and again to cook delicous meals.
I would spend 6 months in this country April -Sept
and 6 months abroad Oct - Mar a diiferent place each time.
I wouldn't tell my kids about the win until they were adults, so that they were not bother by it.
It so nice to dream !!!!!0 -
Other half and I have been talking about this very thing for years...never actually happens though.
1. Would give some cash to family (some are in real trouble at the mo).
2. Set up a couple of trust funds for the girls....but not tell them about it of course
3. Would buy a plot of land closer to family and build our own house.
4. Buy a car as a pressie for my other half...an old style mini (I know extravagent aren't I)
5. Arrange to get married abroad and would take along some select family members (and pay for their tickets too)
As for the rest it would be invested to provide an income of sorts to make sure that no matter what we would always be okay financially.
Other than that, I don't see why any of my current habits should change. I enjoy cooking....why should I change that (might hire a cleaner though). Why pay more for things simply because you can? I'd still look for the best deal, and then put the savings towards something else.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
